Markitown · macOS

Download Optional CLI Tool

This tool is optional. Markitown and all its free and purchased features work without it.

Download the installer

Use Markitown from Terminal, or as your $EDITOR for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot or any other CLI AI agent, git commit, and so on.

If you opened this page from Markitown, you are now in your external web browser. Select the download button below to download the installer from this website. Markitown does not download or install it automatically.

Download Optional CLI Tool

markitown-cli.pkg · SHA-256

If you choose to install the CLI, open the downloaded .pkg file and follow the macOS Installer steps. Downloading the file does not install the tool.

Using the CLI

After installing, open a new terminal and try:

markitown notes.md
markitown -w prompt.md

Use --wait for an editor handoff: save your changes, then close the document window to return control to the terminal. For tools that honor $EDITOR , make Markitown your editor.

To make Markitown your default editor (used by Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot or any other CLI AI agent, git commit, etc.), add this to your shell's rc file:

export EDITOR="markitown -w"

Why a separate download?

Markitown is distributed through the Mac App Store. Its CLI is provided as a separate download rather than bundled with the app: a small standalone tool signed by Gabhel Studios and notarized by Apple.

The CLI is distributed separately from Markitown and is only needed for command-line workflows. It opens documents in the app; it does not add features or unlock the full version of Markitown.
